Justin Mooneyhan is a Nashville native and healthcare professional with over 14 years of experience in healthcare and technology. He has extensive experience in healthcare, technology, strategy, process improvement, and project and portfolio management. He has led all efforts related to IT strategy, technology solution design, architecture, and efforts to drive innovation and technology enablement and modernization across enterprise-level healthcare organizations.
Mr. Mooneyhan holds an MBA in Healthcare Management from Belmont University. He also holds various professional certifications including his Project Management Professional, Certified Professional in Health Information Management Systems, and a Lean Six Sigma Black Belt, among others. He enjoys studying/researching AI, exercising, soccer, reading, and spending time with his wife and four children.
Tell us about a professional success story that you’re proud of.
I’m not sure I can pinpoint one specifically, as I have been lucky to have many successes over my nearly decade and a half of work in the healthcare industry. Throughout my career, I have been fortunate to work at some amazing companies with some amazing professionals, team members, and leaders. What I always feel the most pride in as a professional is seeing those I lead grow and get better – not just as a professional, but as a person too. I’m a big believer in self-improvement and am really passionate about developing others, so thinking about the ones that ‘got it’ and took the advice, lessons learned, etc. to improve themselves, and seeing the positive impacts they have on the teams and organizations I have been a part of, have been my greatest successes and fulfillment as a leader and professional.
What inspired you to choose your current career path?
As I learned more about healthcare in the first few years of my career, I realized the gravity and importance of healthcare to our economy and society. Healthcare touches every single person at least a few times in their lifetime. I also noticed a trend where technology was (still is) advancing at a rapid pace and saw that with the challenges we are facing in healthcare as professionals, technology could be an important tool to address and solve these problems. I believe that technology has the strong potential to help reduce the pains of workforce shortages and burnout, reduced administrative burdens which reduces costs/overhead, better decision-making capabilities (advanced analytics), etc., etc. All of this change and innovation excites me and is something I want to continue evangelizing and executing on because our economy and society truly needs it.
What has surprised you most about working in the healthcare industry?
The slow pace of change. Healthcare is a massive industry (+$4 trillion) and there are so many nuances and variations across the system that make policy formulation and delivery challenging. We all inherently know where the big problems are, but getting alignment across the stakeholder ecosystem has proven challenging due to the varying interests and incentives for these key stakeholders.
If you could go back in time and give yourself one piece of advice before entering the industry, what would it be?
I think it would be to move faster, with a sense of urgency, to professionally and personally develop myself. When I was in my 20’s, I felt like I had plenty of time to learn this and that and what I realized upon reflection is that time flies (no duh, right!). Without a sense of urgency and passion to drive results and improve myself, I’ll only reap slower gains in those various areas I’d like to grow and improve – something I am acutely aware of and intentional about now.
