NASHVILLE – Another year of growth in Nashville’s health care industry is evident in the latest edition of the Nashville Health Care Council’s Family Tree, which shows the dynamic nature of the city’s leading industry.

“The Family Tree offers a unique illustration of Nashville’s evolution as an unparalleled health care industry capital, through the continued success of market leaders and flourishing startups,” said Council Chairman and Healthways President & CEO Ben Leedle. “At the center of the health care community is the Council, working to foster this progress and pave the way for future growth.”

The 2010-2011 Nashville Health Care Industry Family Tree is a well known depiction of the history of Nashville’s health care industry, and a symbol of the interconnectivity and innovation that defines Nashville’s health care expertise. With the support of Council members, community partners and the region’s positive business climate, the industry has a global footprint of more than 400,000 jobs and $70 billion in annual revenue.

Despite challenging economic times, several health care companies relocated to or expanded within the Nashville area over the past year creating nearly 1,300 jobs. Among those were relocations and growth of TNInvestco-funded startup Shareable Ink and behavioral health facilities specialist Acadia Healthcare. Expansions were led by headquarters located in the area, including Medicare Advantage plan leader HealthSpring, respiratory home health provider American Homepatient, medical cost management company MedSolutions, life sciences developer BioMimetic Therapeutics, forensic and drug-testing laboratory Aegis Sciences Corporation and health IT services providers Healthcare Management Systems and Emdeon.

The Council itself also experienced significant growth, with record numbers in events and members. Forty new member companies joined the Council during fiscal year 2010-11, bringing total membership to an all-time high of 215 corporate members. More than 5,000 attended nearly 40 events during the year, offering members more opportunities for engagement than ever before.
