Brookings Report on Positioning Nashville as a Leader in Health IT

March 17, 2023

The advancement of technology has played a significant role in revolutionizing the healthcare industry. Information technology (IT), in particular, has presented unique opportunities for growth and development in the industry. One region that has the potential to emerge as a leader in health IT (HIT) is Nashville, Tennessee. In this report, authored by Scott Andes, John Ng, Carolyn Gatz, and Mark Muro, the potential for Nashville to leverage its strengths in health management to develop a unique HIT cluster is explored. The report assesses Nashville’s current positioning on HIT and recommends three actions that the city can take to strengthen its HIT ecosystem: expanding the innovation infrastructure, building the HIT skills base, and deepening the HIT ecosystem. The report is based on interviews and roundtable discussions with more than 30 local leaders in healthcare and related fields, as well as national industry experts. The Metropolitan Policy Program at Brookings, a nonprofit organization devoted to independent research and policy solutions, produced this report.
