Nashville is poised to emerge as a dynamic center of global innovation in the field of health care information technology (HIT), which was best put by former Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology Dr. David Blumenthal during a recent visit to Nashville.
To capitalize on Nashville’s potential to be an HIT center, the Council partnered with the Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce, the Greater Nashville Technology Council and KPMG to present an article on the Health Care Information Technology Workforce Shortage.
This article, presented at the 2011 HIMSS Summit of the Southeast, is the culmination of a two-year study involving numerous community and business stakeholders to create solutions for developing local talent to fill increasingly-available HIT jobs locally. Work began at a 2010 Health Care IT Workforce Solutions Forum, where panels of leading health care executives discussed with more than 200 attendees the evolving and increasingly important role that HIT professionals play in the workforce and how to grow that workforce to support the growing sector. As a result of that discussion, the Council, Technology Council and the Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce formed an HIT Working Group, convening more than 100 key stakeholders to work together to determine short- and long-term goals to deepen Nashville’s HIT talent pool.
