The Advisory Board Company CEO Addresses LHC Members

063This week, LHC welcomed Robert Musslewhite, chairman and CEO of The Advisory Board Company, for an executive Q&A. Robert has been CEO since 2008, and since that time, The Advisory Board Company has more than tripled revenues and employees and expanded its member base to serve nearly every U.S. hospital and health system and most U.S. colleges and universities.

Robert discussed opportunities for young professionals in health care, challenges he has experienced as a CEO, and strategies that he has implemented to create new offerings based on needs in the market.

“For emerging professionals, it’s a wonderful time to be in health care. There are so many opportunities to drive positive change and improvement…we’re creating a new paradigm right now,” said Robert.

The Advisory Board Company recently purchased Nashville-based Southwind, officially giving the company a foothold in the community.

“There is an energy in Nashville around health care. You see innovation everywhere. Not being in Nashville for health care is like not being in Silicon Valley for tech.”

The Advisory Board Company has garnered numerous awards and recognitions over the past several years, including spots on Modern Healthcare’s top 40 fastest-growing health care company list, Forbes’ list of the 40 most innovative growth companies, the Healthcare Informatics list of top 30 health care IT firms, and Modern Healthcare’s Best Places to Work list for six straight years.

Finally, Robert talked with the group of young professionals about the importance of corporate culture and establishing a work-life balance early in a career.

“Set good habits and priorities early-on. Proactively think about balance and find what’s important to your life outside of work. Remember what is important, and keep that perspective.”

The discussion with Robert Musslewhite is part of ongoing programming for the Council’s Leadership Health Care initiative, offering members insight from national industry leaders in an interactive setting. For more information about Leadership Health Care, visit www.leadershiphealthcare.com.
