After operating for six years as Practice Development Associates, AmSurg cofounders David Manning and Rodney Lunn identify the right group of investors to help them launch their new company. The majority of the original funding comes from Healthways, Inc., known at the time as American Healthcorp, and its founder Thomas Cigarran.

The concept is a consulting firm that will allow surgeons to turn their practices into high-performing ambulatory surgery centers.

In 1997, the company will spin off from Healthways as its own public entity.
