BHC is founded by Edward Stack as an owner and operator of psychiatric hospitals.
In 2001, investors from New York’s Welsh, Carson, Anderson & Stowe buy BHC and name David Vandewater president and CEO. This deal transforms BHC into a subsidiary of Ardent Health Services.
Vandewater, former HCA president, brings more than three decades of hospital-management experience, as well as a new focus for the company. BHC begins acquiring surgical hospitals across the country.
In 2005, BHC will sell its psychiatric hospitals to Joey Jacobs’s Psychiatric Solutions Inc. At that time, BHC changes its name to Ardent Health Services and transforms into a premier owner-operator of surgical hospitals across the country. Ten years later, real-estate investment trust Ventas shells out $1.75 billion for Ardent.
