Capella Healthcare sells to real estate investment trust (REIT) Medical Properties Trust, Inc. Going forward, the hospital company’s 11 facilities are jointly managed by both the REIT and Capella’s senior management team.
The acquisition comes just days after Capella sells its remaining Tennessee hospitals in a four-facility deal with Saint Thomas Health.
The move continues an emerging trend in which, as the industry focuses more on outpatient care, hospitals are finding value in untraditional ways — including their real-estate portfolios. Another recent prominent example comes just months before, when REIT Ventas agrees to acquire Ardent Medical Services for $1.75 billion.
